Speer is one of five senior board appointments to be announced as the five-year countdown to the games begins. He will be charged with developing and managing relationships with sponsors and organising client promotions.

There are currently two sponsors signed up for London 2012 – EDF and Lloyds TSB. Speer has been briefed to secure sponsorship from between four to six more companies for packages worth at least £40m.

Speer was general manager at last year’s Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and was involved in modernising the event, linking up with telecoms conglomerate Telstra and other partners to stream the games online and via mobile phones.

He comes from a publishing background, having worked as the head of consumer publishing and content sales at Australian broadcasting giant ABC.

Other LOCOG board appointments include former BBC live events chief Mike Gibbons, who will be responsible for performance spaces and live sites, and AEG Europe events director Martin Green, who will handle the opening and closing ceremonies.
