Amazon to drive controversial Act

Amazon PR has snapped up a brief to raise awareness of the controversial new Mental Capacity Act 2005

The social issues specialist is also to launch and raise awareness of the government office responsible for overseeing the new legislation: the Office of the Public Guardian.

The Act, which comes into force in England and Wales later this year, has been criticised by health professionals and the third sector for being too hard-line. It stipulates that people with severe personality disorders should be detained, whether they have committed a crime or not.

But, in a written statement, Amazon claimed that ‘stakeholders, including health professionals and their representative organisations, have broadly welcomed the Act.’

The legislation emerged amid government fears that existing laws failed to adequately protect the public.
