Letter: Financial sector has a few saints around

I was interested to read your recent stories about Virgin Media making ‘fresh efforts to bolster its social and ethical reputation’ (15 June) and about HSBC ‘stepping up its efforts to be seen as one of the world’s greenest businesses’ (22 June).

With ethical consumerism becoming increasingly important, we recently commissioned research asking 1,000 members of the public how ‘ethical’ they thought the actions of ten different industries were. Surprisingly, the financial services sector was only ranked eighth – behind food, pharmaceuticals and clothing,

The truth is, of course, that financial services is as ethical as any other industry. It’s just a shame that the message isn’t getting through to consumers, who don’t appear to realise just how ethical financial services has become. Companies should be shouting from the rooftops about their CSR credentials to make sure everyone knows the great things that the financial services industry is doing for the wider world.
