Letter: Civil servants are not exempt from ethics
I was surprised to read Charles Lewington’s suggestion that government communicators are not governed by ethical standards (29 June). Members of the Government Communications Network (GCN), who work across the whole communications mix, are all civil servants. As such they are bound by the civil service code which clearly sets out conduct and behaviour appropriate for civil servants.
However, it would be naïve to say that our communications environment is not a challenging one. That is why there is also clear, detailed guidance on government communications defining how civil servants can present the policies of the government of the day properly and effectively.
Far from bringing the profession into disrepute I would argue that the profession as
a whole benefits from the high standards and expertise government communicators offer.
