FTSE 250 firm Gem Diamonds listed earlier this year, using Merlin for its listing and major diamond sales.
But more recently the central and South African mining firm tendered its PR support and has now brought in Pelham after a three-way pitch (PRWeek, 23 February). Gem Diamonds’ IPO saw it valued at more than £550m.
Pelham will be working with a company that has made big headlines in the past 12 months.
Candice Sgroi heads the account, having been promoted to associate director.
Last year Merlin advised on the sale of the 603-carat Lesotho Promise diamond, the biggest diamond discovered for 13 years. It sold for more than £6.5m.
The mining firm is now embroiled in a contretemps with Botswana’s San Bushmen, although it has said it will consult with the group in the development of the Gope kimberlite deposit located in the Central Kalahari Desert reserve. It bought the mine from De Beer and Xstrata for more than £17m in May.
