Let's Meet at - All Star Lanes

Reviewed by Open Road chairman Nick DeLuca.

Bowling is going hip. From Manhattan to Miami, young entrepreneurs are transforming the once staid sport of the suburbs into a chic urban happening. All Star Lanes brought this idea to the Big Smoke (Holborn) last year, opening up London's first fashionable alley offering. Following in the footsteps of 'The Elbow Room', which initiated the 'trendification' of green velvet sports, 'boutique bowling' is now having its Zeitgeist moment.

The Lanes is not a normal London lunch venue, but is the perfect team outing venue. With a chic lane private room, separate bar and food provision area, it is a great place for a Christmas party, leaving do, company awayday or any other excuse for festive gatherings.

First off, the food is quite good. Solid, predictable fare it may be, but it is done well. Burgers, steaks and even lobster are all good value for money, unlike so many 'style' bars where food appears pretentious on the menu, pathetic on the plate and inflated on the bill.

Drinks are also good value. The bar staff know their stuff, drinks are suave but well made, and there's an interesting selection of beers and wines. With red leather and good music, the bar is a desirable destination on its own.

You need not be obsessed with The Big Lebowski, The Honeymooners or Kingpin to enjoy All Star Lanes.
