Holborn MD Trevor Phillips said the opportunities for PR agencies, particularly in football, were increasing on the business side and the current wave of football takeovers made a sports division viable.
Paul McGoohan joined the City agency this week as sports director. He will spend his summer working on deals such as deposed Thailand prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s proposed takeover of Manchester City.
‘Initially I’ll support the football work and then expand the business into other sporting arenas,’ said McGoohan, who spent nine years at Sky.
He added that as sport increasingly affects business and politics, the role of PR agencies would likely expand.
Holborn has already worked on Randy Lerner’s takeover of Aston Villa, the Glazers’ Manchester United takeover and was hired by the Football League during the ITV Digital battle with Carlton and Granada.
