Postman Pat owner offers up big licensing brief

Entertainment Rights plc – the company that owns the intellectual property to brands such as Rupert the Bear and Postman Pat – is to hold a pitch for a roster of consumer agencies, following the installation of a new head of PR.

Simon Avis has joined from Discovery Networks, where he was corporate comms manager for EMEA. He said he would like to set up a roster of around six ‘media and entertainment’ specialist agencies to work on projects as required. Pitches will take place next month.

Entertainment Rights currently retains Taylor Herring for Rupert the Bear and Mason Williams for Postman Pat. Avis said he had no plans to review the relationship with Taylor Herring.

Avis also has responsibility for corporate and financial PR. He said that Bell Pottinger Corporate and Financial would still work on the company’s financial PR, but that there might be opportunities for a new corporate agency in the longer term.

Avis replaces Liz Morris, who he said had taken some time out to ‘look at new opportunities’.

He spent five years at Discovery Networks and his departure comes three months after European corporate comms director Sue Jackson left the documentary broadcaster (PRWeek, 15 February 2006), leaving Avis in charge for EMEA.

He has been replaced on an interim basis by former Orange head of UK PR Jayne Hutchinson, who has been travelling since taking voluntary redundancy (8 September 2006).
