The LGA is considering creating a slogan for its own defence campaign, which it would print on stickers and distribute to the public via council publications.
‘We are toe-to-toe with the Daily Mail and have dedicated extra resources to the cause,' said a spokesman. The battle is the highest profile example yet of the LGA's new strategy of communicating councils' policies direct to the public.
On Wednesday, the trade association gave an interview to Times Online defending councils' views and voicing the message that fortnightly rubbish collections help people to think about their waste and encourage recycling.
The Daily Mail's campaign launched on Tuesday, urging readers to send off for campaign stickers for their rubbish bins.
‘We are moving the story on giving new information [about recycling and the supermarket's overuse of packaging], particularly to Daily Mail rivals,' an LGA spokesman said.
