Mason takes DfT's head of news post

The Department for Transport has confirmed Helen Mason in the position of head of news.

The DfT's former head of speechwriting has been acting in the role for two months (PRWeek, 25 January).

Reporting to director of comms Jeremy Mooney, Mason oversees a 16-strong news team. She replaces Marcus DeVille, who joined Serco as director of comms for nuclear decommissioning at the end of last year.

Further additions to the DfT's comms function include Warwick Smith, who has joined as chief press officer. He was senior press officer at the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, which he joined 18 months ago.

Specialising in rail, aviation and maritime, Smith replaces George O'Neill, who has been promoted to deputy head of news.

Lucy Emele, 24, of south London, and Gillian Asare, 22, of Wapping, east London, have been recruited for the six-month placements.
