Hit or miss ... Tesco reacts to fuel contamination

Tesco moved swiftly following the discovery this week of silicon in its unleaded petrol. A full-page apology in newspapers promised to compensate customers whose cars were damaged by the compound - a constituent of silicone that is often added to diesel. The contamination was traced to a storage facility in West Thurrock. Morrisons, also affected, soon followed Tesco's lead by urging motorists to claim back their repair costs. A good example of early crisis management.
