JTB UK director Elizabeth Fox said McCluskey’s three-year brief covered consumer and trade PR, plus crisis management.
Elections in the country are planned for later this year, and the tourist board will need to reassure tourists if there is a repeat of the violence that marred the 2002 vote.
Agency principal Judy McCluskey said: ‘We want people with a Jamaican background to use the island for special events.’
McCluskey has brought in Jamaican-born PRO Michael Williams as a consultant for the length of the contract.
The agency was hired after a statutory three-year review of the account. Brighter PR and Grayling also made the shortlist.
The review coincided with the appointment of JTB’s director of tourism Basil Smith, who is based in Jamaica’s capital, Kingston.
JTB would not comment on the value of the account, but it is thought to be worth at least £100,000 a year.
