Thai partner splits from Edelman

An affiliate agency of Edelman in Thailand has terminated links with the US-headquartered consultancy after it emerged that Edelman is advising the recently deposed Thai prime minister.

Spindler & Associates (S&A) ended its affiliate relationship this week. It said Edelman’s client, Thaksin Shinawatra, meant S&A would have to act against Thailand’s best interests, and it was unwilling to do so. S&A is no longer listed as an affiliate on Edelman’s web site.

Shinawatra is the former leader of the populist Thai Rak Thai party. He was deposed in September 2006 in a bloodless coup following allegations of corruption and human-rights offences.

Now in exile, and having had his diplomatic passport revoked, Shinawatra has turned to Edelman for PR advice as he attempts to return to his homeland.

‘We are supporting him as a private citizen in his efforts to return back to his home country,’ Edelman Asia-Pacific president Alan VanderMolen told PRWeek US.
