The hire is confirmed as the firm – which last month denied accusations from regulator Energywatch that it had misled consumers – faces increasing numbers of competitor sites such as Energyhelpline.com, SimplySwitch.com and moneyexpert.com . Energywatch also introduced a new conduct code on 1 January.
WS beat three other agencies to secure the consumer contract. Pitches were held 11 months ago, but work was delayed pending the firm’s takeover by US media group EW Scripps.
While the takeover took place in March, the company was in a state of flux, preventing any immediate work on the account, said WS associate director James Kelly.
PR activity will use the fictional character Joe and his gospel choir from uSwitch’s ad campaign.
It is estimated that around four million Britons switched energy suppliers last year, as power prices rocketed and people sought to get the best deal.
