Ambulance group in strategic move

St John Ambulance - ubiquitous at everything from village fetes to major sporting events - has created a PR manager post to inject more strategic thinking into its comms function.

Emma Sheppard has joined from Breakthrough Breast Cancer, leaving her senior media relations officer role after three-and-a-half years at the cancer charity.

‘My new job is to think more strategically about how we can raise awareness of our work,’ said Sheppard.

‘We work with 46 different counties and part of my remit is making sure the PR team operates across the UK.’

Sheppard manages a two-strong team and reports to Richard Fernandez, who has been promoted from comms manager to head of comms.

The charity has more than 44,000 volunteers, half of whom are aged under 25. It is keen to show that as well as teaching first-aid, it has a role in personal development.

St John has used Good Relations since 2001.
