COI should lead way on carbon-neutrality

The CarbonNeutral Company founder Sue Welland's assault on the lack of sustainability action by PR firms is a clever bit of PR ('PR firms slammed for lack of "green" action,' 10 Nov; 'Prepare to join the green revolution,' 17 Nov).

But there is only ever real movement when market forces exert themselves.

Gordon Brown commissioned Stern; he also forks out more money than any other comms buyer via the COI.

Just over a year ago I banged on the door of the COI with a proposal: 'The COI should take the UK communications industry lead and begin the process of achieving completely carbon-neutral comms over the next five years.'

£300m-a-year spend ought to do it; evidence of rapid progress to carbon-neutrality as part of roster qualification would ensure the whole industry got there, and fast. Was there any interest? No.
