Dornan had worked within the Virgin Group for 14 years - but has been marketing promotions and events manager at rival T-Mobile since May. He originally joined Virgin Group as a Virgin Megastore manager in 1992.
Virgin Mobile and NTL Telewest merged earlier this year in a £962m deal.
Virgin Media, the merged company, unveiled its new name and logo this week, but plans to launch officially in early 2007. Dornan said he would try to ‘surprise and entertain customers and competitors' in the role, which sees him replacing Alison Bonny, who left in September after seven years (PRWeek, 22 Sep). He reports to Virgin Media MD Alan Gow.
Dornan was campaign manager at Virgin Unites - the charitable arm of the Virgin Group - before defecting to T-Mobile earlier this year. Prior to that, he was PR and events manager for the Virgin Megastore, a role he stepped into after managing a store.
The company will offer digital TV, broadband, mobile and home phone services to consumers and businesses. Its consumer agency is Henry's House (PRWeek, 27 October).
Bonny left as a result of Virgin Mobile's merger with NTL, saying it was ‘time for a change'.
