CIPR urges PROs to block EC plans

The CIPR this week called on the industry to back its opposition to European Commission proposals aimed at broadcasting regulations to the internet.

CIPR director-general Colin Farrington said: ‘As PR people, we should be more outspoken in terms
of defending freedom of speech. The less regulation, the better - to encourage creativity, originality and transparency.'

Farrington had a letter published in The Times last week outlining the CIPR's view, which supports the Government and Ofcom's stance. He described the EC's proposals as ‘ill-thought-through', adding: ‘The growth in broadcasting over the web is not only inevitable but increases the options for freely expressing views that fall
outside the mainstream.'
