Diabetes PRO takes on London's Mayor

The balance of political power in London could soon shift from a middle-aged trade unionist to a youthful and glamorous PRO, if Diabetes UK's Penny Mordaunt has her way.

The charity's campaigns chief has decided she wants to take on 'meddlesome' Ken Livingstone in the next mayoral election. Nothing unusual there, but Mordaunt lives on a small island off the Hampshire coast and is prospective parliamentary candidate for the Tories in the not-exactly-London constituency of Portsmouth North.

'It's time for a commuter mayor,' she tells Diary. 'Commuters are equally dependent on London's public transport systems but don't have a say over those in power. This bothers me.'

On her agenda are discount cards for commuters and rules to allow them to see London NHS doctors.

'Whatever happens during the months ahead I am certain that I will have done more for the people of Portsmouth than Ken has ever done for the people of Willesden Green [where the Mayor lives],' she adds, with a flourish.
