As first revealed on PRWeek.com this Tuesday, Heggenes will take up the post, which is based in Oslo - the capital of Heggenes's native Norway - on 1 November.
Heggenes, who resigned from B-M after 24 years' service last month (PRWeek, 11 August), will become part of WWL's global executive leadership team.
Heggenes and his family will continue to be based in London, but he will spend much of his working life in Scandinavia.
WWL employs more than 3,000 people. It was previously known as Wallenius Wilhelmsen Lines but has rebranded to reflect its changing focus.
Heggenes is still working at B-M in London and is in the process of handing over responsibilities to corporate and tech MD Jonathan Jordan, who is to become interim UK CEO.
Prior to joining B-M, Heggenes worked for Aftenposten, a leading national newspaper in Norway.
