Cameron enlists PRO to woo local press

Conservative leader David Cameron has hired Giles Kenningham, a producer for the ITN Lunchtime News, with a brief to boost the party's image in local press.

Kenningham takes up the new role next month, reporting to head of press Henry Macrory.

‘Research shows that more people are getting their news from local papers. We want to make the Conservative Party more relevant to people locally with less Westminster bias,' said Kenningham.

He added: ‘I will be personally involved with promoting Cameron, but will also work on broader party briefs and spend time with the local press in the Lobby.'

His appointment signals that the Tories are taking seriously suggestions that readers are placing increasing trust in local media.

Before ITN, Kenningham was a producer at Bloomberg, among other roles.
