The new role has been created to beef up the DCLG's news function as part of a departmental shake-up, said acting director of comms Jane Groom.
Wilson previously reported to Department for Education and Skills head of news John Shield - who is to follow him to the DCLG as director of comms (PRWeek, 11 August).
Wilson joined the DfES as chief press officer 18 months ago and was previously a senior press officer at Number 10. At the DCLG he will lead a team of around 20, reporting to permanent secretary Peter Housden.
- The revamped Office of the Deputy Prime Minister is on the hunt for a director-general of comms. The role was created after this year's exit of Derek Plews ‘by mutual agreement'.
