London comms chiefs call for better crisis planning

London borough communicators have urged the Association of London Government (ALG) and the London Resilience Team (LRT) to boost councils' crisis comms preparedness.

The demand comes on the first anniversary of 7/7.

‘The standard of emergency comms planning in the capital is variable, with some boroughs  better prepared than others,’ said Westminster City Council head of comms Alex Aiken.

Lambeth Council head of comms Louise Ansari agreed: ‘Given that emergencies do not respect borough boundaries we need to work together more.’ Hammersmith and Fulham head of comms Mike Browne added: ‘There is a need to stand together to ensure universal standards.’

The ALG said it was discussing holding seminars on civil contingency planning with the LRT, but that council PROs should be taking directions from their emergency planning teams. ‘Emergency planning officers should work more closely with their comms staff,’ said ALG head of media relations and PA Neetinder Boparai.
