Scotland uses Big to woo voters to polls

The Big Partnership is encouraging people living in Scotland to register to vote ahead of next year’s local and national elections in the country.

The Electoral Commission and the Scottish Executive have hired Big to promote the deadline for registering. The elections take place on 3 May 2007.

The awareness drive will also encourage people to turn out on the day to vote, and will urge more women, and people from black and ethnic minority groups, to stand as councillors.

‘This brief is tied to an initiative to encourage people who have not previously considered being a councillor to do so,’ said Audit Commission acting director of comms Stephen Rooney.

The agency has also been asked to raise awareness of a new voting system – the first of its kind in the UK. The local government elections north of the border will be conducted under the system of proportional representation.

Pagoda PR’s brief to provide support for the Electoral Commission in Scotland is unaffected (PRWeek, 13 October 2005).
