Builders' group to shed 'cowboy' tag

Construction industry trade body the Chartered Institute of Building (CIoB) has brought in agency support for a campaign to show consumers how to avoid 'cowboy builders'.

The Whiteoaks Consultancy is to target national, regional, trade and broadcast media with the results of a survey of 900 homeowners across the country, who were quizzed about checks they carried out when sourcing builders and how satisfied they were with the work.

Whiteoaks managing director James Kelliher said, ‘People’s homes are usually their most valuable asset, but they often don’t check that the builders who work on them are reputable and will guarantee their work.’

The campaign also aims to raise awareness of the government-supported TrustMark scheme, a database of accredited builders pledging to meet certain standards.

The CIoB has 42,000 members, all of whom must have the necessary qualifications.
