2 minutes with: Jen Barker, editor, My Little Pony

My Little Pony magazine launches on 12 July. Who will be reading? It’s aimed at girls aged three years and over, and aims to make learning fun through a range of educational activities featuring My Little Ponies. It comes with a pull-out workbook with rewards stickers to help the reader work through it, and there are loads of stories, activities, and codes to crack.

What are the opportunities for PROs?
We’re interested in products, books and toys that would interest little girls who love ponies, animals and cute, pink fluffy things. They could be given away in competitions, or as prizes on the readers’ letters page, or we could base posters or educational activities around characters or movies. We are also open to product sampling via cover-mounting, and there are options for sponsorship of pull-out sections.

What’s the policy on using competitor products in the magazine?
We’re working under contract as a licensee, so once we have put a page together using a product, we have to send it to My Little Pony owner Hasbro for approval – so it’s unlikely that rival pet toy products would get in. But things that don’t conflict – such as stationery or educational toys or board games – could work.

How can PROs make life easier?
By ensuring they have plenty of hi-res images so we can create a really nice page and get the approval from Hasbro as quickly as possible. If products do not get approved, they might be suitable for another mag. I also edit Sparkle World, which comes out every three weeks and has a little more scope because it is a compilation magazine, featuring more generalised pages.

How should PROs get in touch?
The best contact is marketing manager Emily Bell, who has an overview of all our kids’ mags and will ensure queries go to the right title.
