Barron, used to rubbing shoulders with Sven and co during his seven years with the FA, was somewhat glumly expecting to be left watching the tournament from the comfort of a London pub.
But, thankfully for Barron, Edelman recently gave its 2,000 or so worldwide staff the chance to win two tickets for Italy vs Czech Republic in a raffle. Guess which veteran of three major football tournaments won?
'There were a few staff demanding a recount,' a slightly embarrassed Barron tells Diary. 'And, to be fair, I'll disappoint a few more by taking my girlfriend along.'
Barron says he misses aspects of his old job at the FA (which, as PRWeek went to press, was - somewhat ironically - admitting 'frustrations' with Fifa for the latter's allocation of spare tickets), saying: 'Watching the World Cup looming was a bit painful for me.'
But quickly stressing that he enjoys his Edelman work, the recently promoted associate director interrupts his preparation of a 'client briefing' to concede: 'The prospect of these tickets is certainly softening the blow.'
