Letter - APPC: self-regulation best for UK lobbyists

Further to your leader ('Lobbying requires its own image makeover,' 2 June), the Association of Professional Political Consultants (APPC) is on a permanent mission to explain to journalists and government that the industry has changed dramatically over the past ten years.

The APPC is committed to promoting the twin pillars of transparency and a financial ban on payment of legislators. Given the majority of PA professionals abide by our code of conduct, the UK is a leading example of self-regulation.

Of course, the chances of a 'good news' story about the success and legitimacy of lobbying in the UK actually appearing on the front page of a national newspaper are practically nil.

If there is any complacency in PA standards, it is not among my members.

Gill Morris, chair, APPC.
