2 minutes with: Kerry Smith, Editor, High Life

Who reads High Life? It’s available on every British Airways flight, in all the different classes – under half of our readers are British. People who fly with BA tend to be cultured, affluent and intelligent.

As new editor, what do you have planned for the mag?
High Life already has some great contributors, such as BBC correspondent John Simpson and, in the current issue, Monica Ali, but I want to put even more of an emphasis on excellent writing and fantastic photography. I’d like to have slightly unexpected people writing. Our September issue, for example, is going to be a fashion special and will have photographer Mario Testino and fashion designer Matthew Williamson writing guides to London and Milan.

What else goes in the magazine?
We carry a real mix of destinations, usually inspired by trends in travelling. For example, we focus on Britain in August, when people might be looking for new places to visit. Ultimately, High Life is a travel magazine, but we have two special fashion issues a year, as well as product pages for fashion and beauty every month.

How could PROs make your life easier?
We need to be kept aware of what’s coming up. New travel resorts are important, but other launches, such as new books and films, are also of interest. Press releases telling us about trends in travel are useful. We are always on the look-out for interesting high-profile people to talk to about travel. High Life has become increasingly beautiful and sophisticated, so great photographs would really help.

Who should PROs target?
All of our journalists’ names are in the magazine, and it’s best to target the person responsible for each section specifically by email.
