Memo to clients: we won't work for free

Two things reminded me today of the parallel world we PROs inhabit. First, I received a market research call from Transport for London. I wanted to share my views, but as I work in PR, I was told I could not take part. I can only guess it was because TfL assumes that PR executives all drive limos.

Second, my agency received a frantic call from a potential client. Halfway through a conference call he breezily explained there was no budget - but we should do the work because one day the company would be 'rich and famous and all that'.

Is it only the PR industry where 'clients' think we will work for nothing?

I decided to test the theory. I loaded up my shopping trolley, took it to the checkout and proudly announced that while I had no money now, I had great hopes of being 'rich and famous and all that'. I can't repeat what the checkout girl said, but she obviously has no future in PR.
