Venture capitalist Accel turns to Red

Accel Partners, one of Silicon Valley’s foremost venture-capitalists, has appointed The Red Consultancy to raise its profile among UK-based entrepreneurs.

Accel – which has backed Macromedia, Real Networks and wireless firm The Cloud – wants to establish itself as the first port of call for consumer technology entrepreneurs.

Red won the brief without a pitch. Deputy MD Helen Nowicka heads the account, reporting to Accel venture partner Judy Gibbons. The agency worked with Gibbons during her previous role as head of MSN’s international business. Red still works with MSN.

Accel commands a large portfolio, including security clients Consentry Networks and Veritas. The Californian company last year invested £6.7m in social-networking company – a deal viewed initially with some scepticism.

But the service has since attracted around 7.5 million members, and is touted as a future rival to MySpace (PRWeek, 12 May).
