Vodafone's secret gig loses its Shine

Phone companies are falling over themselves to show they are in tune with Britain's music-loving youth, with barely a week passing without one unveiling a scheme they hope will ally their brand with the next Arctic Monkeys.

Just recently, two promotions staff working for Vodafone - which is planning various 'TBA' secret gigs this year - interrupted Diary's lunch-hour shop in Hammersmith to hand over (unsolicited) a couple of wristbands for a forthcoming show by indie warblers Snow Patrol.

Unfortunately, said wristbands did not state what time, or where, the 'Covent Garden' gig would take place.

On the day we put in a call to Shine Communications, which handles Vodafone's TBA brief (PRWeek, 3 March), for details.

'I'll have to refer this one to Vodafone,' the Shine man replied, apparently also in the dark.

A call to Vodafone at around 10.30am was routed to a call centre, which took a message. An hour later, after another call, Diary was told the company's response would be 'urgent'.

Finally, our call was returned - an hour before the 2.30pm gig was to take place. A dejected Diary sat head in hands - the event's timing would not allow us to attend.

There was little cheer when an email arrived from Shine at 3.53pm. It seems there had been a music event in Covent Garden earlier that day...
