Greenwich takes Fairtrade status

Greenwich Council has been awarded Fairtrade Borough status. The Fairtrade Foundation rewarded the council for its local media campaign over the past year to encourage caf├ęs in the district to sell fair-trade products.

It also encouraged general businesses and community organisations to offer fair-trade goods.

The south-east London authority has established a steering group to ensure its commitment to complying with Fairtrade town status.

'As a diverse borough that hosts communities from many parts of the world, supporting economic development overseas helps to demonstrate that we support equality and quality of life for all,' a council spokeswoman told PRWeek.

There are currently 185 Fairtrade towns and boroughs in the UK.
