Organon hires Ward to fill top UK comms role

Organon Laboratories has brought in Emma Ward, associate director at Pope Woodhead & Associates, to its top UK PR job.

Ward has joined Organon – the firm behind contraceptives such as Cerazette and popular hormone-replacement therapy Livial – as comms manager.

She has responsibility for all external and internal comms, reporting to MD Frans Cromme.

Cromme said the Cambridge-based firm planned to crank up its comms, adding: 'We have several initiatives to be proud of but we aren't used to sharing our success.'

The company is co-developing with German firm Schering what could be the first contraceptive drug for men. Dubbed the 'male pill', the product is in phase II of clinical trials.

Ward spent four years at St Ives-based Pope Woodhead. She has previously worked at Santé Communications, Lowe Fusion, Grayling and Ketchum.

In joining Organon, she is the first full-time replacement for Andrew Greaves, who left in 2004. The firm's comms since then have been overseen by a part-time interim manager.

Organon – the healthcare arm of Dutch chemical giant Akzo Nobel – will continue to use two-year incumbent agency Munro & Forster Communications on product comms, Portcullis Public Affairs for PA, and freelance practitioners.

Ward said no agency review was planned.
