Microchip maker picks Unity in UK

Europe’s biggest microchip maker, STMicroelectronics, has hired Unity PR to a freshly created UK account.

Although details of the brief remain under wraps, it is thought the company is eager to bolster its profile as it bids to better compete with rivals. Global competitors include Dutch electronics firm Philips, German company Infineon and South Korean group Hynix Semiconductor.

STM was the third-biggest semiconductor supplier in China last year, when the group generated global sales of £5.16bn.

Its full-year profits in 2005 dropped to £149m from £337m in 2004, partly due to restructuring.

The Franco-Italian manufacturer also makes components for set-top boxes and digital TVs. Its major clients include Nokia and Sony.
