Spanish tennis federation names comms chief

Spanish tennis federation Real Fedracion Espanola de Tennis (RFET) has put Andoni Larrueca at the helm of its newly created communications department in Barcelona.

Larrueca will lead a team of two, reporting to RFET's general manager Albert Riba.  He will work alongside Neus Avila and Xavier Fajardo, who head the PR and protocol and event departments respectively.

Prior to joining the RFET Larrueca was communications director at Panasonic Europe in London for six years.  He returned to Spain last May.  'Tennis is very high profile in Spain and presents a lot of opportunities for career advancement' he said.

Larrueca will work to raise the federation's profile in Spain and abroad, and promote its expansion into new activities targeting disabled citizens and youth groups.  The RFET also wants to strengthen its relationships between the Spanish press and its 19 regional divisions.

The federation, which celebrates its centenary in 2008, represents the country's national tennis team, which has won two Davis Cups.  The team comprises eight key male and female players including recent headline grabber Rafael Nadal.
