Uni folk refute claim of low standards

Graham Collins, director at Dorset-based Magna Communications, has sparked outrage among the university community with his letter (3 March) slating youngsters' writing skills as 'woefully poor' and their analytical abilities as 'at best elementary'.

Hitting back is Sunderland University third-year PR student Stephen Davies. 'The last thing the profession needs is someone in a position like Mr Collins to criticise the very people who may look to emulate him one day,' he rages.

Meanwhile, Leeds Met second-year student Elizabeth Warburton writes: 'I hope that Magna Communication's (sic) next intake proves Collins wrong.'

She adds, somewhat cheekily: 'I graduate in 2008 if he cares to drop me a line.'

Collins remains bullish: 'I hope she shows more initiative and actually contacts me! Frankly, "I've got a degree so employ me" just won't do.'

That's enough now, folks.
