Thames Water, which issued a hosepipe ban to some areas earlier this month, has been criticised for the poor state of its pipes – with London's network the worst offender in terms of leakages.
It is working in 13 London boroughs to reduce leakage, and has to date replaced 250 miles of pipe. A further 850 miles are planned to be replaced by 2010.
The PR brief might extend to cover the campaign urging residents to save water. Thames Water is co-ordinating activity with the London Mayor's Office.
'We are looking at taking an agency on but we do not yet have a brief. Things are at an early stage,' said Thames Water media relations manager Andrew Boyd.
Mayor Ken Livingstone said in a statement: 'Climate change means there will not be enough water to support inefficient use in years to come.'
