Birmingham media chief Geber retires

Birmingham City Council is on the hunt for a head of news following the retirement of 16-year stalwart Audrey Geber.

The corporate media manager post at the council – the largest
local authority in Europe – oversees a team of 11. Geber had held the top press role for six years.

Her exits comes as the council reviews the remit of its head of comms post, currently held on an interim basis by former MG Rover PA manager Alistair Morton. The permanent post has been vacant since Myra Benson's exit in June 2004.

Responsible for a corporate team of 42, the role may be expanded to cover the 30 comms staff throughout the council's individual service departments. However, it is unlikely that the council will recruit a permanent head of comms until the arrival of a new CEO
after the May local elections.

As well as media, the council's corporate team is responsible for campaigns, the website and its resident and staff magazines.
