Export agency's Watson to lead DTI staff comms

The Department of Trade and Industry has appointed civil service stalwart Rod Watson as head of internal and electronic comms.

He arrives from the Export Credit Guarantee Department (ECGD), where he was head of communications for four years.

The ECGD sits within the DTI, helping exporters win business abroad.

Overseeing a team of 16, Watson will now handle staff comms for the DTI, which employs around 4,000 people. He has responsibility for staff newsletter 'DTI News', the department's intranet and its website, which is being upgraded with a new content management system.

Watson's team is also responsible for organising events and staff away days.

Watson takes over from John Doherty, who joined the Department for Work and Pensions as head of internal comms last year (PRWeek, 16 Sep 2005).

Watson has held a range of high-profile comms roles, including director of marketing at the then Department for the Environment. He was also a strategic comms adviser to the Government on its millennium celebrations.

The ECGD has brought in Steve Roberts-Mee to replace Watson. Roberts-Mee was formerly comms advisor on the EU and G8 presidencies at the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
