Diary: Respect shown at Mackay memorial

An equally stellar cast turned out at the Foreign Press Association to honour the life of Gregor Mackay. The hugely popular Media Strategy director died in late November, aged 36, after a brave, eight-week fight against a rare form of cancer.

Mackay was William Hague's press secretary when the latter was leader of the Opposition.

The eloquent Yorkshire terrier was among the gathering of politicos and hacks, along with fellow Tory grandees Michael Howard and Liam Fox, as well as BBC political editor Nick Robinson.

The memorial raised £30,000 for lymphoma research. This was thanks partly to the donation of a Smart Car for the raffle by Media Strategy client Intelligent Finance, won, bizarrely, by a Mr Smart.

Donations to the Gregor Mackay Memorial Fund can still be made at www.gsttcharity.org.uk/donations/gregormackay.html.
