Kenya plots agency hire for anti-corruption drive

NAIROBI: The committee in charge of the Kenyan government’s anti-corruption campaign is considering bringing in a PR agency.

Laurence Gikaru, a member of the campaign's steering committee, said such a move was one of the recommendations made by Saatchi & Saatchi, the ad agency appointed to run the project.

'We don't have PROs who can add value on the issue of corruption at a strategic level,' Gikaru told PRWeek. PR is currently handled in-house.

President Mwai Kibaki launched the country's anti-corruption efforts last month under the slogan 'see Kenya with proud eyes'.

Saatchi & Saatchi Nairobi managing director Catherine Kinyany said the priority was to make ordinary Kenyans – many of whom have grown up accepting corruption as a fact of life – see that they have a responsibility to tackle the problem.

The announcement of the campaign followed a series of corruption scandals – widely covered by international media – which have led to the resignations of three Kenyan ministers.
