Ofwat policy chief to join Gambling Commission

The Gambling Commission has lined up Beryl Brown, head of competition policy at water regulator Ofwat, to be its first director of policy and communications.

Brown will oversee policy, comms and legal teams with a budget of around £1.2m. She is set to join in May and will report to CEO Jenny Williams.

The commission was created as a result of the 2005 Gambling Act. It aims to keep gambling crime-free and ensure that vulnerable people are protected.

Brown's remit involves advising the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and senior managers, and ensuring the commission's role is communicated effectively.

The commission's powers do not come into effect fully until September 2007. Until then it is undertaking a series of consultations with gambling organisations, consumer and faith groups, charities and the public.

Ofwat and The Gambling Commission declined to comment. Brown was unavailable for comment.
