Irvin, who starts on 20 March, will oversee government and community relations over BAA's proposals for a second runway at Stansted and a third runway at Heathrow. He will report to director of corporate and public affairs Ian Hargreaves, who described him as an 'outstanding political strategist and a great coalition builder'.
Prior to the TGWU, Irvin was special adviser to Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott from 1997 to 2001 and his chief of staff in opposition. He was also director of the Freedom to Fly Coalition, campaigning for sustainable growth in the aviation industry.
His appointment follows Simon Baugh's hire to handle government relations for Heathrow (PRWeek, 17 Feb).
