UK Athletics hires ahead of Olympics

UK Athletics, the governing body for the country’s 14,000 athletics clubs, has hired former British Red Cross internal comms manager Graham Doughty as its first internal comms chief.

His brief is to ensure 100 staff in the Solihull head office and 50,000 volunteers across the country are informed and engaged ahead of the 2012 Olympics.

The move follows The Foster Report in May 2004, which was triggered by disappointing results at the World Championships in Paris in 2003. It recommended UK Athletics demonstrated better management and greater accountability in winning funding.

UK Athletics aims to coordinate the efforts of clubs to improve athletes' performance. It is funded by organisations including UK Sport, BBC Sport, Adidas and Norwich Union.

UK Athletics has also hired Leader Communications account manager Vas Charalambous as media officer.
