Smiths boosts corp comms for growth

FTSE 100 engineering company Smiths has made three group- level comms hires, following the departure in December of head of external comms Caroline Harris to Rolls-Royce.

Former Citigate Dewe Rogerson associate director Rachel Lankester has joined as comms manager under group comms director Chris Fox. The company has also enlisted former Times and Daily Mail journalist Laura Peek. Lansons assistant account executive Laura Guerin joined Smiths in December.

Lankester left CDR last month after 20 months with the firm. She had previously been with Weber Shandwick Square Mile for six months after freelancing at the New York office of Capital MS&L.

The group is working across Smiths' four divisions: aerospace, detection, medical and speciality engineering.

Smiths has continued to expand by acquisition and this month paid £14m for Lorch Microwave, adding microwave filter technology to its electronic components and subsystems business Interconnect.

At the beginning of the month the company announced a 20 per cent year-on-year hike in sales.
