Gordon Brown's call for a British Day may have won the support of senior figures such as Commission for Racial Equality chief Trevor Phillips, but the nationals were more cynical. The Independent lamented that 'the PM and his heir tie in British freedoms and liberties with a spun past', while the Evening Standard said Brown had 'rarely had the misfortune to read as badly written and intellectually catastrophic a speech'. Even Daily Mail columnist Peter McKay described it as 'breathtaking in its cynicism'.
