Abbey comms chief Coops axed in Santander cull

Abbey has made comms director Thomas Coops redundant following Spanish firm Grupo Santander’s purchase of the bank last year.

He has become the highest profile casualty of Santander's axe-wielding, which has seen Abbey's comms team drop from 77 staff to 35.

Coops has been with the company since starting as an Abbey National branch manager 17 years ago, rising to comms chief in 2000. He leaves at the end of February without a job to go to.

His departure follows that of head of media relations Christina Mills in September. Head of employee communication Sarah Larvor will leave at the end of January.

Mills has been replaced by media relations manager Matthew Young, while Larvor's duties will be divided between senior employee comms managers Kirrie Kendall and Phil Knightly.

Although Coops' City PR role is now redundant, Abbey is recruiting for a head of comms to cover internal communication, media relations, PA, CSR and its charitable trust.
