Highlands agency in green energy drive

Economic development agency Highlands and Islands Enterprise is to trumpet the benefits of renewable energy with a year-long campaign in 2006.

The agency – based in northern Scotland – wants to counter negative perceptions of renewable energy portrayed in the media and is hunting a PR firm for the task. The campaign will target the 435,000 residents in the region, which covers more than half the landmass of Scotland.

Renewable energy is a business sector with potential for development in the Highlands and Islands region because of the area's substantial resources compared with other parts of the UK.
Enterprise senior development manager Claire MacLean said:

'Because of the media focus on wind energy there is a danger that people associate renewable energy with wind farms. However, other options include hydro, tidal and wave energy.'

The Scottish Executive wants 18 per cent of energy to come from renewable sources by 2010.

Pitches will take place in March and April.
