PRide Awards: Eastern approaches

In association with the CIPR we look at the best in communications practice from East Anglian agencies

Paul Dickson,
chairman,
CIPR East Anglia

CIPR PRide is acting as a catalyst to raise the profile of the CIPR in the East Anglian region and increase the PR industry's involvement in the institute at a regional and national level.

The value of  winning a PRide Award is clearly being recognised in the region. Not only is it good for team-building, but it also plays an important role for many agencies' business development.

The  judging panel was greatly impressed by the quality of all the entries this year,  especially those in the Young Communicator category. The finalists in this category made  the job of the judges very difficult indeed, each demonstrating  a great deal of professionalism and enthusiasm during their panel interviews. Congratulations to Lisa Ashley-Worland from Black Pig who eventually won the vote.

Thank you to everyone who submitted their work for  the
scrutiny of their peers. And congratulations  to all our  winners.

Help us to Plan the Future

'The Five Faces of Chelmsford' was Chelmsford Borough Council's attempt at creating a brand around its Local Development Framework (LDF) – a planning blueprint for the development of the borough until 2021. Phase one of the campaign was a competition to chose the 'five faces'of the LDF – with each person representing each aspect – housing, community, the environment, the local economy and transportation. Stories were created around them for the local media to encourage people to send their views on the LDF.  A total of 3,700 submissions came through – more than double the 1,500 target.

Budget Consultation with People First

The 2000 Local Government Act requires that all local authorities must consult with residents on their annual budget setting. Norfolk County Council felt that residents with learning difficulties were under-represented in consultation feedback, so it a launched 'People First of Norfolk' – a series of six consultation groups that brought volunteers together to take residents with learning problems through a feedback questionnaire (including explaining what councils do and how money is raised). Forty-seven people with learning disabilities submitted their views.

INSX

Internal newsletter INSX is the only regular communication designed to reach all 39,000 members of staff at Essex County Council. When research revealed staff had a much closer relationship to this than ad hoc staff newsletters, even greater consideration was given to ensure that all articles were written with individuals and teams in mind. Photographs and contact details of staff are at the heart of the bi-monthly magazine and when an internal communications survey was carried out, 87 per cent of staff said they felt INSX was 'useful' or 'very useful'.
